Tract Risk

What is this tool?

Tract Risk maps two federal datasets side by side at the census tract level — the CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and the FEMA National Risk Index (NRI). Together they show where communities face both high social need and high natural hazard exposure.

Zoom in to see tracts

Census tracts are small geographic units — roughly 1,200 to 8,000 people. You need to zoom to at least county level before tracts appear on the map. Use your scroll wheel or the +/- buttons.

Three views

• Social Vulnerability — CDC SVI percentile. Higher = more vulnerable.
• Hazard Risk — FEMA NRI overall score. Filter by specific hazard types using the chips below the slider.
• Combined Risk — Both datasets joined. Tracts must appear in both to be shown. Use both sliders to filter simultaneously.

Filtering

Use the slider to show only tracts above a minimum threshold. In Hazard Risk view, select one or more hazard chips to color and filter tracts by those specific hazard scores instead of the overall NRI score.

Click a colored tract to see its full data profile in the right panel — sub-theme scores, key indicators, and top hazard risks.
